Read below why our students and parents love eMotion!
A few years ago, my eleven-year-old son had reached a point where participating in traditional young men sports (soccer and basketball) and Boy Scouts had moved from enjoyment to a chore. You could tell he was not really enjoying them. My wife and I did not want him just sitting around and questioned what he could do that he would enjoy. My wife and I toyed with the idea of signing him up for dance since he danced around the house all the time. I told her if he was willing, then I would support him. Myself growing up in the traditional sports didn’t think he would go for it. When she approached him, he was actually pretty excited. My wife found eMotion had just opened near the house and his class would not interfere with any of his other activities. It was a perfect place to see if he liked hip-hop dance or not.
Well, he loved dance. He was ready to go a half hour before each class. I supported, watched, and saw a transformation of this little group of dancers in this class in a relatively short time and that impressed me. After only four ninety minute classes, this group was not only improving quickly, but becoming a really tight and supportive team. Now Keri, this young dance instructor, was beginning to impress me. They all danced at different levels, but they were improving and helping each other improve as a group. My son played in sports since the age of seven, and had some pretty decent coaches.
He made even made All Stars, but this was the first time that I saw a coach/instructor encouraging a group to help each other. The kids NEVER put anyone down. If mistakes were made, they each encouraged the person to shake it off and helped them get it right. A value I truly encourage and support. Keri is not your “traditional” dance instructor. No divas. It is all about the team and the dance and in that order
A couple more months went by and I was waiting outside to pick my son up from class and I saw my son and Keri engaged in what appeared to be a serious conversation. I decided to step in and see what was going on. Boy was I off. My son and Keri were actually discussing the routine and Keri was taking advice from this young dancer. She actually encouraged input from them. Again, I was impressed.
As the year went on, the team got better. There were flash mobs, performances, and competitions. My son was so extremely happy. His excitement about dance at this point showed just how much he wasn’t enjoying his other activities. As a parent…all you want is for your child to be happy, stay healthy and active, and be taught good values by the people you introduce into their lives. My wife and I made the determination that Keri and dance met all those needs and gave our son permission to quit everything else. I can honestly say it was very apparent that a weight had been lifted.
This year it was more of the same. New dancers, mixing different age groups, and within a short time there was a supportive team that was being developed. This year we added Keri’s Hip Hop exercise class on Wednesday nights. He got his mom to do it with him and I get to see two extremely sweaty, bouncing, dancing, and laughing people come into my house after her class. The exercise is second to the bonding time shared between a mom and her son. As they were heading out for their first class together, my wife jokingly asked my son if he would make fun of her. Without skipping a beat…he told her it was not right to make fun of her but to encourage her to work hard and get better. AND THAT IS WHAT KERI IS TEACHING MY SON…along with dancing!!!

When I joined TEAM, I had zero confidence. I’m not even sure what compelled me to try out. I had been in a car accident a few years earlier and got pretty banged up. My body was not in dancer shape and I had never even danced hip hop before. I was terrified and sick to my stomach. I figured everyone would look at me all judgy and talk about what a chunk I was behind my back, but when I walked in, all of that fear went away. Everyone was so nice and friendly. They all made me feel so comfortable and relaxed. All of the girls are super encouraging and they truly care. When we don’t have TEAM on Saturday’s I get pretty pouty, and I never want class to be over. Keri is a BEAST and she makes me want to work harder than I ever have in my life. She’s such an inspiration. She’s a fabulous dancer and an incredible choreographer. I’ve never had so much fun in my life. I’m a naturally shy person, but with my TEAM I feel like I can accomplish anything. They’ve pushed me to not only be a better dancer, but to be a better person. I don’t know what I’d do without TEAM.

One of the things I love most about being part of the eMotion Dance and Fitness Studio Family is the ability we have to bring the community together through a medium, such as, dance.
As a parent, it makes me happy to have found something that my whole family can enjoy both separately and together. A mom, a teen, and tween! As an individual, it makes me proud to have found a place that teaches the value in TEAMWORK with all the right layers of what makes a team, and individual, succeed.
Even dressed as zombies during a Halloween event, our TEAMS and family members exude excitement and inclusiveness that attract many others, like haunted trail goers, into our group to dance and have awesome fun with us. A community. It’s not just what we do, it’s who we are.
That’s the kind of energy that Keri Drugan, and her eMotion Dance and Fitness company, brings out.

As parent whose child just finished her first year on the TEAM, I believe Keri is an incredible teacher. She teaches the whole child, getting to know each one’s special personality and spirit. In TEAM, each child feels like they belong. She meets each child where they are with regard to proficiency, and allows each one to progress from that point. We have seen our somewhat shy child jump in the middle of a hype circle to give it a try! Keri gives the TEAM many opportunities to perform – it is so far beyond the traditional recital experience, and the dancers are energized to share their moves in public. TEAM is ALWAYS positive and upbeat. Keri listens to the students’ ideas and incorporates them into their performances. After a year, our daughter is still thrilled to attend each week. We also appreciate the extra opportunities Keri makes available to her students, such as attending the Monsters of Hip Hop tour, or working with a special choreographer. TEAM is simply awesome. I would recommend it to anyone.

“I love you, just don’t dance.” That’s what I was told, and I listened. Apart from the Macarena and the Hustle, I didn’t think I could dance. Keri and her students welcomed and encouraged me. In under a month I was ready to dance in public with the confidence that I knew what I was doing. I can’t explain the freedom I felt that night. I’ve moved out of the area for work but I still keep in contact with the lifelong friends I made at emotion dance studio. I used to believe that I couldn’t dance, after what I’ve experienced I believe that we can all dance.

I have been taking classes with Keri for nearly five years, primarily hip-hop cardio and hip-hop choreography. Keri has passion for dance and fitness, it comes through in each class she teaches. Her energy and enthusiasm is inspiring, she puts thought into every movement, chooses great music and makes each class so much fun youalmost forget you’re actually working out.
Keri is patient, encouraging and helpful to anyone no matter what their fitness or dance level. She always makes time for questions and during class will work with you individually to make sure you’re comfortable with the movements. I really can’t say enough good things about the whole experience, it makes me very happy to know she is able to share her gift with so many people. I look forward to each class and I look forward to continue working with Keri, I will follow her where ever she teaches!
I would recommend her to anyone interested in a fresh outlook on fitness and dance!

It all started with a dance workshop at the eMotion Burke location in 2012. 5 years later and I am still dancing every week with eMotion! When I first started dancing with Coach Keri I had pretty much no dance experience and zero formal training. I went from a shy, insecure single mom to a confident and outgoing dancer/performer/teammate!

Joining T.E.A.M. has been one of the best decisions I made this year.
T.E.A.M. gives me the opportunity to “put some coolness into my life” and also gets me out of my comfort zone to do things such as the Haunted Trail or the performance at Fall for Fairfax that I’ve always wanted to do, but really needed the right people to do it with. Also, the fact that T.E.A.M. has an adult chapter to it makes it great, because I have this group of people (and a positive environment) who are struggling just like I am as opposed to practicing with teens who can probably pick up a routine faster and with less personal cost (ie muscle strain, joint pain, etc).
…it’s very refreshing to have dance in my life. The honesty that comes with dancing, along with its associated people.
In short, it keeps me happy in more ways than one.
